Hospital as an organization

Hospital requires precision and accuracy to ensure that the lives of the people are safe and sound. For this to occur, hospitals need to function in an organized and well-defined manner.

But hospitals have numerous staff, physicians, nurses and other healthcare professionals. So, how can all these people be organized? Well, to make this feasible, hospitals adopt the vertical organizational structure.

Vertical Organizational Structure:

With many people being a part of the healthcare team, the organization too has many different layers. In short, each staff is allotted with specific functions. And this is supervised by an administrator. So, the hierarchy is as follows:

  • Board of Directors
  • Executives
  • Hospital Department Administrators
  • Patient Care Managers
  • Patient Service Providers

Board of Directors:

This forms the governing body of the hospital. So, this group of people makes all the high-level decisions including the budget and the healthcare services to be provided. They usually include the members or experts of the healthcare team or the university faculty members in the case of teaching hospitals. The hospitals affiliated with religious groups also appoint a clergy as a director.

Executives:

These people implement the decisions made by the governing body. They are selected by the directors. While the chief executive officer is involved in the overseeing of the business strategy, the chief financial officer handles the monetary aspects. Others include the chief medical officer, chief nursing officer and so on.

Hospital Department  Administrators:

They are the head of each department and manage all the responsibilities of their department. Their job entails them to report to the executives regularly regarding the functioning and needs of their department. Non-medical departments such as food services also have their own department heads.

Patient Care Managers:

Managers are the supervising nurses or physicians that handle a group of subordinates who are directly involved in patient care. They ensure that all the healthcare services provided are proper, ethical and complies with the hospital requirements. The provision of good working conditions for their employees is also part of their job.

Patient Service Providers:

Finally, we have the nurses, physical therapists, pharmacists, physicians and surgeons that are directly involved in patient healthcare. They have a narrow job description that includes maintaining records and providing the most efficient patient care to ensure a speedy recovery. The laundry workers and in-line cooks are also part of this team.
